“Wicked” star Ariana Grande will have to miss the premiere of her upcoming film in Brazil after her plane experienced maintenance issues.
The actress-singer told fans that she was going to miss the premiere of “Wicked: For Good” in São Paulo on her social media early Tuesday morning, Nov. 4.
“Brazil, I can’t believe this is happening and I am beyond devastated to be sending this message,” Grande wrote on her Instagram story.
“A few hours ago, my team and I had to deplane our flight, as they had to do maintenance on the plane due to a safety issue and it will not be taking off until 11 a.m. tomorrow, which means that I would not be making it in time for the ‘Wicked For Good’ São Paulo premiere,” she continued.
Grande, who plays Glinda in the “Wicked” films opposite Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, said there was no chance of her getting to the premiere despite her team’s efforts.
“My team and Universal have tried every single thing possible to fix this,” Grande explained. “We’ve searched every other flight, overnight, early morning, connecting flights, commercial and also private options and absolutely nothing was available or possible that would get us there in time. Even in attempting a private option, there is a permit necessary in order to fly from here that takes time to attain.”
The premiere would have marked Grande’s first time in Brazil in several years, according to Variety. The actress expressed her heartfelt condolences to fans in her Instagram story.
“I am so heartbroken that I’m unable to be there with you all. We sincerely tried everything we could and I apologize from the bottom of my heart,” Grande wrote. “Please shower my incredible castmates with all of the love that I wish I could be showering you with and have the most beautiful celebration.”
“Wicked: For Good” serves as the follow-up to the first “Wicked” movie, which came out in November 2024. The film, which was an adaptation of the first act of the hit 2003 Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, earned 10 Oscar nominations — winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
The São Paulo premiere of “Wicked: For Good” marks Universal’s first major international rollout for the film, Variety noted. The next premieres are slated for Paris on Nov. 7, London on Nov. 10 and Singapore on Nov. 13.
