Good news, Arianators: Our favorite pop girl is releasing a new track. More than a week after unveiling the artwork and release date for her upcoming studio album, Petal, Ariana Grande announced on Friday that her first single, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” will debut on May 29.
Grande unveiled the news on Instagram, posting two black-and-white portraits of herself in the same vein as her Petal album artwork.
“One of my favorite songs i’ll ever write produced by my favorite collaborators and dearest human beings in the world, the brilliant [Ilya Salmanzadeh], the one and only max martin (and me) i simply cannot wait for it to be yours,” Grande wrote.
The Wicked star first announced her eighth studio album, out July 31, last month, alongside a series of photos to mark her new era of music. Playing on the fact that this will be her eighth studio album, Grande officially announced its upcoming release on April 28 at 8 a.m. PT. She also shared an album teaser titled “Petal in the Pavement” that same day.
Petal will feature 12 tracks and is produced by Grande and her longtime collaborators Martin, Salmanzadeh and Peter Lee Johnson. The album will be released under BabyDoll Music, Grande’s personal sub-label with Republic Records.
“It’s called ‘Petal,’ basically about something that is full of life, growing through the cracks of something cold, hard and challenging. It’s kind of about breaking up with all different kinds of negative attachments — whether it’s my own monsters in my own head, external voices and things that no longer serve me,” Grande said in an Instagram reel. “It’s a little feral as well. It’s definitely from a place that I have been too shy or polite to tap into before. And this just kinda feels like, ‘f**k it.’”
That Grande named the upcoming album Petal doesn’t exactly come as a surprise to some of her fans, who are familiar with the singer’s Vogue Italy cover story from last March, in which she shared a poignant metaphor: “I am a flower that continues to grow with new petals, leaves, buds. But I am still learning to water it.” The title was also subtly mentioned in a promotional video for Grande’s makeup brand, R.E.M. Beauty, in February, when she and her mother, Joan, introduced new lip glosses, including one called Petal.
Ahead of the album’s debut, Grande will kick off her Eternal Sunshine tour, her first in seven years. Starting June 6, she’ll be on the road for about two months, playing a series of sold-out shows through North America before closing with 10 shows at London’s famed O2 Arena.
