On Friday, April 3 from 5-7 p.m., the Artists’ Studio in the Foothills (ASiF) Art Center & Gallery will host the opening reception of its Fourth Annual Ekphrastic Fantastic: Art-Inspired Poetry Show. What, you may ask, is ekphrastic poetry? Ekphrastic poetry is poetry written about art.
Each year, as tradition will have it, ASiF’s annual Resident Artist Show in January serves as inspirational fodder for the center’s annual Ekphrastic Fantastic: Art-Inspired Poetry Show. For this show, a curated group of local and regional poets are invited to view and select artworks to serve as subjects for their “ekphrastic” poems. Once written, the poems are printed and displayed on the center’s gallery walls beside the artworks which inspired them. In addition to this event, a second seated poetry reading for this show is scheduled for Friday, April 24 from 5 – 7 p.m.
On the evenings of April 3rd and 24th, the public is invited for seated presentations in the center’s community classroom, for which ASiF’s resident artists will be tasked as “art runners,” delivering their art to and from the stage as the poets read their ekphrastic poems aloud.
This year’s show features fourteen artists and twenty-three poets, the works of which will be displayed side by side on the center’s gallery walls throughout the show. Published works by the poets will also be available for sale and signing at the readings.
Participating poets are Bennett Berardi, Gene Berson, Catharine Bramkamp, Taya Burke, Kirsten Casey, Katie Chilton, Liz Collins, Judy Crowe, Kate Dumont, Molly Fisk, Betty Naegle Gundred, Suzanne Koliche, Michael Leydon, Donna Meares, Selene Mitlyng, Diane Pendola, Judie Rae, Jennifer Smat, Susan Solinsky, Karen Terrey, Alicia Vandervorst, Robin Wallace, and Susan Warden.
Participating artists are Karen Brooks, Roseanne Burke, Kimberly Carlsen, Mariela Cunqueiro, Dori Greenbaum, Cheri Guerrette, Michelle Jewett, Peggy McDermott, Amanda Paoletti, Rose Paratore, Louise Pryor, Stephanie Schriver, Robin Wallace, and Lani H. Zila.
The Ekphrastic Fantastic: Art-Inspired Poetry exhibit will be on display in the center’s gallery Friday, April 3 through Saturday, May 16. Artworks and poems will exhibit side by side for public viewing throughout the show during weekly gallery hours, Thursdays – Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
ASiF’s annual Ekphrastic Fantastic: Art-Inspired Poetry Show is in collaboration with the Nevada County Arts Council and is an official fringe event of the Sierra Poetry Festival. The mission of this curated collaboration is to bring these two thriving Nevada County communities of visual artists and poets together to share and grow a mutually supportive audience.
