You’d expect the fourth most populous state in the US to have its share of arts and entertainment options. Yet New York State somehow exceeds even those expectations.

From world-class programming at the Chautauqua Institution to fabulous museums in Rochester and historic live theatres in Buffalo, the Empire State offers an embarrassment of cultural riches.

Buffalo

Shea’s Performing Arts Center

The beautiful Shea’s Performing Arts Center in downtown Buffalo, a wonder of French and Spanish Baroque and Rococo architecture, is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026. This year’s lineup includes John Legend, a production of The Book of Mormon, and comedian John Mulaney.

The KeyBank Center will host a stellar lineup this year, including Andrea Bocelli (fresh off his impressive performance at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony), comedian Nate Bargatze, Journey, and Barry Manilow.

Darien Lake Ampitheater draws some of the biggest names in the music biz, and this year is no exception with performances by Triumph, Zac Brown, The Dave Matthews Band, and Tim McGraw.

Buffalo AKG Art Museum

Buffalo is home to some of the top museums in the state, led by the striking Buffalo AKG Art Museum. It houses one of North America’s premier collections of modern and contemporary art, with works by Monet, Picasso, and other masters. The museum recently underwent a major expansion.

Hear live jazz where legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane once jammed at the historic Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum, reopening this year after a multi-year expansion and renovation.

Set in a handsome historic building downtown, the CEPA (Center for Exploratory & Perceptual Arts) showcases world-class photography.

Or head to the imaginative Silo City complex, where live music and poetry echo from inside a towering grain silo.

Rochester

Strong National Museum of Play

This upstate city boasts a rich arts and entertainment legacy. It’s home to The Strong National Museum of Play, a vibrant and colourful destination devoted to all things fun and interactive. Regular college nights invite students to dive into electronic games and vintage pinball machines.

Rochester is also home to the George Eastman Museum, set on the splendid estate of the photography and motion picture pioneer. The world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives, it houses millions of objects and screens hundreds of films each year.

Corning

The Corning Museum of Glass features everything from Tiffany masterpieces to ancient Egyptian art. It’s the largest glass museum in the world, and this year marks its 75th anniversary.

Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC)

Just a few minutes north of Albany, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center is located in the historic, charming resort town of Saratoga Springs and features one of the country’s most prestigious outdoor amphitheaters. This year’s lineup includes James Taylor, Foreigner, The Barenaked Ladies, Luke Bryan, and Patti LaBelle, who will perform as part of the annual Saratoga Jazz Festival.

Albany

The state capital is home to the Albany Institute of History and Art, founded in 1791 and one of the oldest museums in the US, as well as the elegant Palace Theater and a host of other arts and entertainment venues.

Southwest New York State

National Comedy Center

Roughly 90 minutes from Buffalo, the Chautauqua Institution has hosted performances and lectures from some of the world’s most fascinating figures for years. The lakeside town also charms visitors with horse-drawn carriage rides.

The National Comedy Center in nearby Jamestown is the United States’ official cultural institution and museum dedicated to presenting the story of comedy and preserving its heritage for future generations. Opened in 2018, the center offers an enriching visitor experience with state-of-the-art technology.

Comedy fans shouldn’t miss the Lucile Ball Desi Arnaz Museum in Jamestown, dedicated to one of history’s most iconic comedic couples.

From world-class museums to theatrical and musical performances featuring some of the biggest names in the business, New York State offers a truly sensational array of arts and entertainment.
