Events coming up in the Greenville area offer music, arts, theater and family fun. Here is a sampling.

‘Matilda’

Magnolia Arts Center, 1703 E. 14th St., will present “Matilda” at 2 and 7:30 p.m. today. Based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl, the musical centers on Matilda Wormwood, a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She is unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher Miss Honey. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students, senior adults and members of the military. Movies on the Lawn

Summer Movies on the Lawn will feature “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at ECU’s Main Campus Student Center lawn off 10th Street. Movies are free to attend. Parking is available for $2 per hour at the parking deck behind the student center. Movies will be shown Tuesdays and Fridays through July 17 (except for July 3). Piano Festival

The East Carolina Piano Festival will be held today through July 5 on the ECU campus and includes concerts at A.J. Fletcher Recital Hall. The festival opening concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. today, featuring guest and faculty artists Sam Gingher, Keiko Sekino, Yukiko Sekino, Alan Woo and Kwan Yi. Wei-Yi Yang will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Stephen Beus will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Individual concert tickets are $25 or $10 for students, or $60 for a festival pass for all three concerts. The Young Artists Program’s final concerts, which are free to attend, will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 5. Visit music.ecu.edu/summer/piano-festival/tickets.

Summer Art Series

Greenville Museum of Art and Farmville Parks and Recreation will host a Summer Art Series beginning Tuesday at the Farmville Community Center, 3886 S. Main St. Free sessions on painting, drawing, clay and printmaking, open to ages 8 to 14, will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon July 10, July 17, July 24, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11. Registration is required. Farmville Fourth

Farmville will host its Independence Day celebration on Friday. Events at the Town Common begin at 6 p.m. with live entertainment by the Tar River Community Band, as well as food and fireworks beginning at 9 p.m.

Greenville Fourth

The City of Greenville will host Independence Day festivities beginning at 6 p.m. July 4 along 101 E. First Street. While portions of the Town Common are still being renovated, First Street will serve as a music staging area. The celebration will include live music, a beer garden and free bounce houses for kids. Food trucks will be on-site with items available for purchase. The fireworks finale will be on display at dusk, about 9:15 p.m.

No Way Cabaret

Farmville Community Arts Council will host No Way Cabaret at 7 p.m. July 10-11 at the Paramount Theatre, 3723 N. Main St. The event will include comedy, music, drama and other performances. Tickets are $10-$15. Visit fcac.ludus.com/index.php or call 252-753-3832.

‘The Voice’

Magnolia Arts Center, 1703 E. 14th St., will host the second preliminary competition for Greenville’s “The Voice” at 7:30 p.m. July 11. Tickets are $10. Visit magnoliaartscenter.com. Finals will be held at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at John Paul II Catholic High School.

City Art Gallery

City Art Gallery, 511 Red Banks Road, will host “Summer Salon,” featuring paintings, sculpture, ceramics and glass from more than two dozen artists, through July 11. Visit cityartgreenville.com.

‘Boys Next Door’

Magnolia Arts Center, 1703 E. 14th St., will present “Boys Next Door” at 7:30 p.m. July 15-18, with additional matinee performances at 2 p.m. July 17-18. In a communal residence, four men with varying degrees of mental issues live under the supervision of an increasingly burned-out young social worker. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students, senior adults and members of the military. Visit magnoliaartscenter.com.

Concert series

The Concert on the Common series will conclude at 6 p.m. July 16 with Chairmen of the Board. Concerts in the series, hosted by Inner Banks Media, are free and are being held this year at the ECU Tailgate Plaza outside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium while the Town Common is undergoing renovations. Movies in the Park

Winterville Human Relations is sponsoring a showing of “Up” for Winterville Parks & Recreation’s Movies in the Park series July 17 at the Winterville Rec Park Amphitheater, 332 Sylvania St. Movies begin about 30 minutes after sunset. Concessions are available. For more information call 756-1487.

Farmville gallery

“VIBE” (Visual Identify, Bold Expression) is scheduled through July 25 at The Emily Monk Davidson Gallery, 3725 N. Main St., Farmville. The exhibit will feature work from students from The Oakwood School and Farmville Central High School, ranging from prekindergarten through 12th grade. Visit facebook.com/FarmvilleArts.

Music House concert series

The Music House, 408 W. Fifth St., will host a summer concert series through August. The series will feature Hank, Pattie and the Current at 3 p.m. July 26. Their unique style blends bluegrass with a classical string quartet in an innovative way. The suggested donation for each concert is $20. Each concert will include drinks on the porch 30 minutes before the concert starts, and refreshments and wine tastings during intermissions. Email [email protected] for reservations.

Emerge Gallery

Emerge Gallery and Art Center, 404 Evans St., will feature the summer exhibition “Art Superstars” through Aug. 14. The annual exhibit showcases work created by Pitt County Schools students. For more information, visit emergegallery.com/events.

Museum of Art

Greenville Museum of Art, 802 S. Evans St., is featuring “Embodied,” from North Carolina artists Lynne and Suzanne Scott Constantine, in the West Wing Gallery. “Rooted In Place,” in the Commons Gallery, showcases oil and watercolor landscapes and interior scenes by Louisiana-based artist Kathryn Keller.
