Aryan Khan stepped into the spotlight this week not as Shah Rukh Khan’s son, but as a first-time director with an award in hand and a clear message about who mattered most to him.
At the NDTV Indian of the Year event in New Delhi on Friday, the 28-year-old won the Best Debutant Director of the Year award for his Netflix series The Ba**ds of Bollywood.
It was his first major industry honour, and he chose to use the moment to talk less about fame and more about family.
The young director said after receiving the award, “Good evening everyone. Sabse phele main apne cast, crew aur Netflix ko thank you kehna chahtha hun jinhone ek first time director pe itna bharosa kiya aur mere saath itne pyaar, mehnaat aur enthusiasm ke saath kaam kiya. Congratulations to all the winners tonight.”
Aryan also addressed the obvious comparison with his father, one of India’s biggest film stars.
He further stated, “Yeh mera phela award hai and I hope mujhe aur bhi bahut sare awards milenge kyunki mere dad ki tarahn mujhe bhi aawards bahut pasand hain. But this award is not for him. This award is for my mom…”
He went on to credit Gauri Khan for the values she drilled into him, adding that the award might mean “aaj ghar jaake mujhe thodhi kum dant padegi.”
Sitting in the audience was Aryan’s nani, Savita Chhibber, who appeared emotional as he spoke.
Aryan’s series, a satire on Bollywood’s inner workings and outsider struggles, has struck a chord with viewers.
The Ba**ds of Bollywood has received positive reviews and was recently named IMDb’s Most Popular Indian Series of 2025.
