Ashley Tisdale thinks taking social media breaks is a good thing.
The 40-year-old actress published a new blog post on her website By Ashley French about why she believes taking time off of social media is healthy. The post comes amid fallout regarding her viral “toxic” mom group essay, with Hilary Duff—who is rumored to be the subject of the piece despite Ashley‘s rep denying it—becoming the latest celeb to chime in.
“I love social media in a lot of ways. It can be inspiring, funny, and a great way to stay connected. But I don’t think it’s where we’re meant to live our lives, which is why I take regular breaks,” Ashley began. “Every time I step away, I’m reminded how different it feels to be fully present—to not be half in a moment while also thinking, Wait, did I already post today?”

She says she’d become too “automatic” with social media, not enjoying a photo of a nice moment, but instead thinking about how good it would look on the Instagram grid.
Ashley continues, “When I’m off social media, I’m more with my friends, more with my kids, more in the moment. Unsurprisingly, those moments are better when I’m not holding my phone at arm’s length trying to look casual.”
Most of all, she says, it is the “sheer volume of information” that wears her out.
“You can open your phone without thinking and suddenly be absorbing outrage and fear, usually without looking for it. One minute you’re thumbing through Grammys red carpet photos, the next you’re ten videos deep into something you didn’t ask to see, wondering how you even got there,” writes the High School Musical alum.
She shares that the “first time” she took a break, she “got the gift of perspective,” and the ability to stay up to date on current events on her own terms.
“Obviously social media can be fun and useful, but it doesn’t need to be the place where our lives happen,” Ashley says, before encouraging others to find out for themselves.
