Athens marks Juneteenth with music, arts, and community events
Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the end of chattel slavery in the United States, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom.
Today, the holiday serves as a celebration of Black freedom, culture, history, and community, often marked by festivals, educational programs, music, and public gatherings. In Athens, two major community-centered events anchor this year’s observance. Organized by longtime local institutions and advocacy groups, both gatherings emphasize culture, education, and community connection through performances, public programming, and opportunities to support Black-owned businesses and organizations.
