For more than a decade, Cole Swindell has been quietly writing one of country music’s most moving ongoing stories. It began in grief, continued through remembrance, and now arrives at a place of joy and healing with his new song, ‘Girl Dad.’
Released today, the song finds Swindell reflecting on the life his late father never got to see. It is a deeply personal conversation across time, updating the man whose death in 2013 inspired one of modern country music’s most emotional hits, ‘You Should Be Here.’

The brilliance of ‘Girl Dad’ lies in its lyrical simplicity. Throughout the song, Swindell addresses his father directly, recounting the milestones that have shaped his life since they last spoke. He tells him about meeting the woman he would marry, about their wedding day, and then arrives at the song’s emotional centrepiece.
“I married a girl, Dad.” Moments later comes the reveal: “We’re having a girl, Dad.”

It’s a clever piece of songwriting, but more importantly it’s devastatingly effective. One line looks back on the woman who changed his life; the next looks forward to the daughter who will change it again. In just a few words, Swindell captures the passing of generations, the continuity of family, and the bittersweet reality that his father is no longer physically present to witness it.
Viewed on its own, ‘Girl Dad’ is one of the strongest songs of Swindell’s career. Viewed alongside two earlier songs, however, it feels like the final chapter of a remarkable trilogy. The first chapter was 2015’s ‘You Should Be Here.’ Written after the unexpected death of his father, William Keith Swindell, the song became a career-defining hit and resonated with anyone who had ever wished a loved one could have shared a milestone with them. Whether it was a graduation, a wedding, a birth, or simply an ordinary day, the song captured the ache of an empty seat and the words left unsaid. It topped the country charts and remains one of the most beloved songs in Swindell’s catalogue.

Three years later came ‘Dad’s Old Number’ from his 2018 album ‘All Of It.’ While it wasn’t released as a major radio single, it dug even deeper into the grieving process. Rather than focusing on a specific moment of absence, the song explored something many people who have lost a parent understand all too well: the inability to delete their contact details. The number remains in the phone long after they’re gone, a small but powerful connection to someone you aren’t ready to let go of. The song became a fan favourite and remains one of the most poignant tracks Swindell has ever recorded.

Now comes ‘Girl Dad,’ but unlike the sadness that defined the previous two songs, this one is filled with gratitude. The grief hasn’t disappeared, but it has evolved. Rather than focusing on what his father missed, Swindell spends much of the song celebrating what has happened since. He married Courtney Little in 2024 and welcomed daughter Rainey Gail in 2025. The song serves as an update, a letter, and a tribute all at once. That is what makes ‘Girl Dad’ such a powerful conclusion. It doesn’t replace ‘You Should Be Here’ or ‘Dad’s Old Number.’ Instead, it answers them.

The young man grieving his father’s absence in 2015 is now a husband and a father himself. The son who once wished his dad could be there for the big moments is now experiencing the biggest moments of his life. And while the sadness remains, it is balanced by hope, love and the knowledge that his father’s influence is still present in everything he has become.

If ‘You Should Be Here’ was the heartbreak, and ‘Dad’s Old Number’ was the longing, then ‘Girl Dad’ is the peace that finally follows.
