Austin Butler (born August 17, 1991, Anaheim, California, U.S.) is an American actor who began his career as a child actor in Nickelodeon and Disney Channel shows and then successfully transitioned to adult roles, earning particular acclaim for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis (2022).

Family

Butler was born in Anaheim, California, to Lori Anne (née Howell) Butler, who operated a day care in the family home, and David Butler, a commercial real estate appraiser. Butler later described his childhood as solitary because of his shyness. He preferred playing guitar and skateboarding in his backyard to playing sports or hanging out with other kids. His parents divorced when he was seven, but following his mother’s tumultuous remarriage, Austin, his elder sister, and his mother moved back in with David Butler. The family later moved to Van Nuys, California. Butler compared his parents’ relationship to that of siblings as his mother continued to date, while his dad lived in their refurbished garage.

Teen sitcoms and other early credits

At about age 11 Butler tagged along to an audition that his stepbrother had landed. Despite being a self-described introvert, he ended up auditioning and was cast as an extra on Nickelodeon’s Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. Butler went on to appear in 41 episodes from 2005 to 2007. During this time he also appeared on two episodes (2006, 2007) of Hannah Montana, a Disney Channel series that starred Miley Cyrus. Other teen sitcoms followed as Butler made a guest appearance (2007) on iCarly and later appeared in 10 episodes (2007–08) of Zoey 101.

In 2009 Butler made his feature film debut in the family comedy Aliens in the Attic. He then landed a recurring role on the drama Life Unexpected (2010–11), but the show was canceled after one season. In 2011 he appeared in his first starring role, playing a thief who targets celebrities’ homes in the TV movie The Bling Ring. He later had a lead part in The Carrie Diaries (2013–14), a prequel to the popular series Sex and the City.

Career shift and stardom

Butler’s career changed dramatically in 2018, when he appeared in his first Broadway production, a revival of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh. Butler’s portrayal of teenager Don Parritt received rave reviews from critics. In addition, Denzel Washington, the play’s star, promoted the young actor to Hollywood insiders. This initiated a rebranding period, during which Butler began appearing in higher-profile projects. He notably had a supporting role in Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood (2019), a dramedy set in Los Angeles in 1969. It starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, and Butler played Tex Watson, a follower of Charles Manson. Also in 2019 Butler appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die, a comedic horror film about a small town attacked by zombies; he joined a cast that included Adam Driver and Bill Murray.

Upon learning that Baz Luhrmann was making a film about Elvis Presley, Butler—and numerous other actors—began lobbying for the lead role. Butler produced a short audition tape in which he sang “Unchained Melody.” That led to a meeting with Luhrmann, and Butler eventually landed the coveted role. The actor then fully committed himself to the part, researching the legendary singer’s life and listening to all his songs, while also learning Elvis’s Southern twang. In addition, to mimic Elvis’s famous hip swivels, Butler worked with a movement coach. The result was a captivating performance that garnered rave reviews from critics, even when the film received some criticism. Elvis, which was released in 2022, earned a number of Academy Award nominations, and Butler garnered a nod for best actor.

The role catapulted Butler to stardom. His next film was The Bikeriders (2023), about members of a motorcycle club. His costars in the crime drama included Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer. In 2024 Butler appeared in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, a sequel to the 2020 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic Dune. Also that year he costarred in the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air, about bomber pilots in World War II.

In 2025 Butler had a supporting role as a cult leader in director Ari Aster’s COVID-19-era western Eddington. The star-studded cast also included Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, and Joaquin Phoenix. Later in 2025 Butler starred in Caught Stealing, a crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky. Butler’s character in the film is a former baseball player turned bartender who gets unwillingly involved in a criminal plot in 1990s New York City.
