Bad Bunny has been unveiled as the headlining performer at next year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.
In the early hours of Monday morning, the Puerto Rican singer and rapper shared the news in a teaser clip depicting him sitting on the bar of an American football goal.
Throughout his time in the spotlight, Bad Bunny has won three Grammys, racked up four number one albums in the US, collaborated with some of the biggest names in music and also broken out into acting, modelling and even, briefly, professional wrestling.
Earlier this year, he announced a residency in his native Puerto Rico, followed by a 23-city stadium tour that notably did not include any dates in the United States.
Amid the current political climate in the States, i-D recently asked Bad Bunny if this was a decision made “out of concern about Latinos in the United States”, to which he responded: “Man, honestly, yes.”
“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the US, and none of them were out of hate – I’ve performed there many times,” he noted, before adding: “There was the issue of – like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”
Posting on X moments before the Super Bowl announcement was made, Bad Bunny – whose legal name is Benito Martínez Ocasio – wrote (translated from Spanish): “I’ve been thinking about it the last few days, and after discussing it with my team, I think I’ll do just one date in the United States.”
With his upcoming set, Bad Bunny will make history as the first solo Latino headliner at the Super Bowl, as well as the first male performer of Latin descent to appear in the slot.
And the significance of this announcement given the current situation in the US has not been lost on his fans:
Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation has been partly in charge of the Super Bowl Halftime Show since 2019, said: “What Benito has done and continues to do for Puerto Rico is truly inspiring. We are honoured to have him on the world’s biggest stage.”
Next year’s Super Bowl will take place at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday 8 February 2026.
