The Bold and the Beautiful is making history with the introduction of their first gay male couple with Remy (Christian Weissmann) and Deke (Harrison Cone). Now the actors are explaining why now is the perfect time to start watching and what it was like to film the series first same sex male kiss.
Weissmann and Cone were interviewed by OUT to discuss the landmark pairing for the CBS soap opera.
The Significance of Remy and Deke
The Bold and the Beautiful is Cone’s first role, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand the importance of the character. The Summer I Turned Pretty star explained, “It’s a landmark, pivotal moment in the history of the show, which is a super exciting period to be a part of the show.”
Cone understands that there may be a lot of viewers who don’t watch soaps, that are overwhelmed by the thought of watching a series with over 9000 episodes to watch. But the actor encourages viewers to just jump aboard and start watching, sharing, “It’s also an exciting point to tune in, even if you’ve never watched it, because you’re tuning in on a point that has a new dynamic and relationship.”
The First Queer Male Kiss
The Bold and the Beautiful isn’t new to members of the LGBTQ community, with former female relationship between Karen Spencer (played by original cast member Joanna Johnson) and Danielle (Crystal Chappell). The series also made international headlines with the introduction of Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) who was revealed to be the soaps first transgender character. Maya went on to become the first transgender bride in daytime television.
With that said, Bold has never had a same sex kiss shared between two of it’s male characters. Weissmann understands the importance of this, thus when they went to film it the actor shares, “I was like, ‘It better be hot. It better be cool. It better be sweet.'”
The actor went on to explain how they understand the weight and responsibility that they have with this story. He said, “I was excited that we get to be the first queer male characters on the show; that’s not a title that we take lightly. It’s a lot of responsibility, we want to handle those characters with a lot of care and a lot of grace.“
Teasing The Future
Weissmann is excited to watch his characters relationship grow, and is quick to ensure viewers know that things will not all be rainbows and roses for the characters and warns viewers that they are “still a flawed relationship like any relationship between two characters is on a soap opera.”
