The Cincinnati Tradition is one of the drum and bugle corp groups performing at the Summer Music Games in Mason.
Thousands of spectators will celebrate the 29th anniversary of the Summer Music Games in Cincinnati as they come together for the Drum Corps International Competition in Mason.
The event is at 7 p.m. Monday, July 27 at Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium.
Contest Director Bruce Brown, who has been directing the competition with his wife, Sara, for 29 years, said The Summer Music Games in Cincinnati competition will highlight a handful of World-Class drum and bugle corps.
“This is one of our biggest line-ups we have had in while. We will have nine corps this year and it is an exciting line up. The performances that our fans are going to get to see are superior,” he said.
Brown said because the show is in Late July, it allows corps from the West Coast to have time to travel to Mason.
“We rarely get corps like Santa Clara Vanguard from Santa Clara, Calif. We also have River City Rhythm from Anoka, Minn. and Phantom Regiment from Rockford, Ill. coming,” Brown said.
The fundraiser often draws a sell-out crowd. The Summer Music Games in Cincinnati, a major Drum Corps International competition, features a diverse group of more than 1,200 youth, from around the world, who will come together in the Greater Cincinnati area to display their talents and compete as a part of a summer tour. Students in World Class corps are primarily college-age with some high school involvement, ranging in age from 16 to 21.
Funds raised from the event go to the Fairfield Tempo Club, which supports the school’s music programs. Monies go towards musical instruments, musical arrangements, equipment, and uniforms for the Fairfield High School Marching Band.
Brown said each drum and bugle corps is comprised of up to 165 brass, color guard and percussionists that will give spectators an amazing display of athleticism, artistry and outstanding musical performances. Judges from across the country will judge the competition.
“It is a spectacle of sight and sound,” Brown said. “Come out and experience drum corps goose bumps.”
Participants in U.S. based drum and bugle corps hail from more than 15 countries. The Summer Music Games tour includes more than 110 events throughout North America. Total attendance at the tour events is expected to exceed 350,000 guests.
Summer Music Games in Cincinnati has a diverse fan base. Fans from 21 different states have already purchased tickets and will be attending the event.
“This is entertainment for the entire family. We will see infants, of people who have performed in corps, to 90-year-olds. There’s definitely a following and we appeal to a wide audience. There’s something for everybody,” Brown said.
Fans from California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia have previously attended the Summer Music Games in Mason.
Summer Music Games in Cincinnati is hosted by Fairfield High School Marching Band, and the band will perform the National Anthem at the start of the event. After the performance, the student musicians will have the opportunity to watch the show or volunteer at the event. Summer Music Games is a rain or shine event.
Over 5,000 attendees are expected at the event, including about 1,200 performers. More than 80 volunteers help to run the event, including students, parents and community members.
