Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are said to be caught in a ‘tug-of-love’ after receiving an invitation to spend Christmas with the King at Sandringham.
The invitation does not extend to their parents, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, who were stripped of their royal titles after revelations about the extent of their friendship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The former Duke and Duchess of York were seen arriving separately for the baptism of Beatrice’s second daughter Athena on Friday, at the Chapel Royal at St James’ Palace.
Neither were seen afterwards as Beatrice hosted a christening celebration in a nearby pub, the Mail on Sunday reports.
Beatrice and Eugenie are said to be in a conflicted position as their loyalties are divided between their parents and the rest of the royal family.
A source told the Mail that Princess Beatrice is particularly under pressure “to be in three places at once” on Christmas Day. Her preferred option is understood to be in the new Cotswolds home she shares with her husband, interior designer husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and their children, with a visit from her mother Sarah.
However, the insider says she also feels obliged to show her face with the rest of the royals at the King’s Norfolk estate. Meanwhile, a third option is to spend one final Christmas at Royal Lodge with her father, who will soon leave the royal estate.
The source added: “Unless she makes a decision to pick one side and one side only, she will spend a lot of time in the car.
“Overall it falls to the princesses to soothe family divisions. They are struggling with Christmas.”
Prince Eugenie is said to be less uncertain, with plans to stay at her home in Portugal with husband Jack Brooksbank and two sons.
The source added: “She is so settled there, far from all the drama.”
This weekend, it was reported the family of the late Virginia Giuffre are “deeply disappointed” by the Metropolitan Police’s decision not to investigate claims Andrew asked his taxpayer-funded bodyguard to dig up dirt on her.
They said in a statement on Saturday: “We are deeply disappointed that the Metropolitan Police have dropped their investigation into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor without explanation and without speaking with us, Virginia’s family.
“We emailed with a detective from the Metropolitan Police yesterday, Friday, Dec. 12th, who gave us no indication that this announcement was imminent.
“Indeed, he asked us if we had any evidence we would like to present; we had not yet replied. With the Epstein files about to be released by Congress since the passage of the Epstein Transparency Act, we are surprised that the Metropolitan Police didn’t wait to see what further evidence might appear.
“While we have hailed the UK’s overall handling of the case of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor previously, today we feel justice has not been served.
“We continue to challenge the system that protects abusers, especially as more evidence comes to light that can hold people accountable.
“Our sister Virginia, and all survivors, are owed this much.”
