Twin Rivers’ leading scorers were Will Parker with 16 points and Chadyn Bell with 12 points. Bernie improved to 13-5 on the season, while the Royals fell to 13-7.
The Royals led 2-0 to open the game, but the Mules scored the next 9 points and held the lead for the rest of the game. They built a 26-12 lead by the end of the first on the strength of five three-pointers, two from Hobgood and three from Chase Guiling.
Twin Rivers had no defense for Bernie’s outside shooting, and the Mules’ defense held the Royals to just 8 points in the second quarter while scoring 25 of their own to lead at halftime 51-20.
One play stood out in particular in the second quarter. After both teams had played furiously to that point, Bernie controlled the ball with 2:30 in the half and Guiling playing point. As he dribbled the ball, neither team moved for about 20 seconds, as if both sides had agreed to take a breath.
Then the Royals rushed the ball, and all ten players moved at once at top speed in dramatic contrast to the preceding pause, an amazing display of skill for both teams.
While the Royals kept pace with the Mules in the third quarter, the 30-point deficit was too much to make, especially since Bernie never gave the Royals a chance to cut into their lead with an extended run.
“Defensively, we did a pretty good job,” Long said. “They have some good players, so we knew we had to come in ready to guard.”
Bernie outscored Twin Rivers 15-7 in the fourth quarter to close out the game and a big road win.
