Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) and Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) just released their newest single and the title track for their follow-up to 2022’s Reset, the delightfully titled A ? of WHEN.
The album is full of promise and contributions from harpist Mary Lattimore, British multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan and “Steel Witch” Zena Kay on pedal-steel guitar. The loops of harp, sequences of steel drum, webs of pedal steel and even bits of a mariachi band from Mexico City add elements of bizarre-ness to everything.
According to the duo, “A ? of WHEN” is “about that inexorable moment when all the things we’ve messed up finally catches up with us. … It’s the sound of looking out at the world, sighing, and transforming it into ebullient songs with your friend, anyway.”
The full record comes out July 10, but you can hear “A ? of WHEN” on the latest episode of What’s All This, available right now via the player at the top of the page.
