Bird feed sale, park projects and appreciation event highlight busy season ahead
The Quail Hollow Volunteer Association (QHVA) has announced several upcoming events as spring approaches. The annual Spring Bird Feed Sale will take place at the Hartville Elevator, 111 N. Prospect Ave., Hartville, on Friday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, April 11, from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents are encouraged to stop in to buy bird seed, other spring landscaping supplies and meet QHVA volunteers. If there are questions, contact the elevator at 330-877-9320.
Starting in April, volunteers will meet on Thursday mornings to beautify the park. Volunteers are also needed for Music Nights, house tours, vintage teas, the summer sale and other special events throughout the year.
If there is interest in serving on the Garden Gang, QHVA says, “Grab some gloves and join in” for spring cleanup as the Manor House flower beds are raked, weeded, cleaned up, planted and mulched. Outdoor work is dependent on the weather, so please let the Hollow know what times work. In addition, the original rock garden, designed by Warren Manning, a landscape architect for the Stewart family, is being uncovered and replanted according to the original design. This is an outdoor activity that will require digging, planting, moving materials and mulching.
There is also a Neat and Tidy Team that handles decorating and tidying the Manor House. QHVA maintains select rooms in the home and provides all supplies and equipment needed. Volunteers can team up with a buddy to vacuum and dust on a day and time that fits their schedule. It is likened to having fun in a life-sized dollhouse.
There is also a Fine Furnishings Committee involved in selecting and purchasing interior furniture and other historic items for the Manor House. Members help stage the 40 rooms of the home based on their original uses by the Stewart family. Funding for these projects comes from donations, members, sponsors and fundraising events.
QHVA is always looking for new members and volunteers to use their skills to assist with a variety of activities. If there is a love for hospitality, history or fixing things, the Hollow offers tailored volunteer opportunities. Some tasks can be done as a group, others individually, and some from home. Late in April, an event called “Here’s the Scoop” will take place. It is an appreciation celebration to be held Thursday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Manor House, Quail Hollow Park, 13480 Congress Lake Ave., Hartville. QHVA is grateful for the support of members, sponsors, donors and volunteers, and the event is a way to say thank you and share future plans for the park. RSVP is requested so organizers can plan for the evening, which will conclude with a super duper ice cream sundae bar. Responses are requested by April 20.
Quail Hollow is honoring Bonnie Stewart Mikkelsen, 1932–2026, a beloved mother, partner and community member who passed away peacefully at the home of her son in Michigan, surrounded by several of her children. A generous benefactor to QHVA and Quail Hollow Park, a celebration of her life will be held this summer.
