LOS ANGELES — Prime Video’s “Spider-Noir” has landed on Prime Video.

The series is set in a stand-alone universe, not a spin-off of the 2018 “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” film, in which Nicolas Cage voices Spider-Noir. It’s also not directly tied to any Sony or Marvel films.

“Spider-Noir” is the story of Ben Reilly (Cage), a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator during 1930s New York. He is forced to grapple with his past life following a deeply personal tragedy as the city’s only superhero.

Who is The Spider?

Lamorne Morris, who plays Robbie Robertson, told Spectrum News he’s lazy and a drunk.

“He is human. When we see superheroes, we tend not to focus on the human element,” said Morris. “I think the best ones are when you can really see their real vulnerabilities and the things they battle with… even their demons. When you meet him [Spider], you see him immediately battling demons. And that is an honest look at what a person would go through if they were a superhero.”

How did Nicolas Cage come to play Ben Reilly?

“Spider-Noir” creator Oren Uziel told Spectrum News that early in the process of creating the show, he knew Cage would be his man. Uziel said he remembers asking if it would be okay to age up the character not only because he couldn’t relate to high schoolers anymore but also because that version of Spider-Man had already been done.

“Once everyone was onboard with that [and] because Nic had already done the voice, we knew he was familiar with the character, and I sat down with him pretty quickly. He loves comic books, but he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Noir. We really hit it off, and it was off to the races right away,” said Uziel.

Where is “Spider-Noir” going to fall in the universe of all other Spider-Man iterations?

Jack Huston, who plays Sandman, said “Spider-Noir” is the top… the best.

Abraham Popoola said “Spider-Noir” is incredibly distinct.

“It’s so distinct,” he told Spectrum News. “I think every department across the board … first of all, the scripts are incredible. The backing, you know, the vision from the producers and the execs, costumes, set designs, cinematography, and of course, we [the cast] come and bring our own little part of the puzzle piece. People really bring in everything to something and having a shared vision of something that hasn’t existed before… I think it’s [‘Spider Noir’] is really up there.”

Recreating 1930s New York in Southern California

For Uziel, it’s always great to shoot in Los Angeles and work with an LA crew.

“LA has a lot of great, beautiful Art Deco architecture,” he said. “Broadway downtown really feels like Broadway in New York. We were able to take advantage of a lot of things that are in LA and shoot and recreate New York in the 30s. You also get to shoot in the studio back lots, and you are shooting the same places that a lot of these movies were made back in the day. Shooting at Universal… shooting at Warner Brothers, it’s sort of incredibly romantic to me to be able to sort of make something that can enter film history where film history was made.”

All eight episodes of “Spider-Noir” are now streaming on Prime Video in both color and black and white— take your pick or watch it twice in both options. But Popoola recommends watching it in black and white first.

The series stars Nicolas Cage, Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Popoola, Huston and Brendan Gleeson.
