Taylor Sheridan knows a thing or two about television. Yellowstone, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King are just a few of the series he’s brought to life, but his next venture differs from his previous shows. The Road, which Sheridan is executive producing alongside Blake Shelton and Keith Urban, is an all-new reality singing competition series that differs from the typical format of those that fill the airwaves today. Here, read all about Taylor Sheridan’s involvement and what Blake Shelton has said about working with the Yellowstone creator on his new venture.

Blake Shelton dishes on ‘The Road’ and Taylor Sheridan

Last week, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and Gretchen Wilson opened up at the CBS Fall 2025 Press Day about their new series, and Shelton was sure to give credit where credit was due when it came to Taylor Sheridan’s involvement.

“Taylor Sheridan makes a difference in everything we’re doing,” Shelton said. “He’s such an incredible visionary, and he just has a way of looking at something and seeing the potential of it in a way that I don’t think 98% of us have, and that’s why he’s been so successful, and why people are so driven to things that he does, because no one else is really creating the kind of content that he’s making.”

He continued, “A lot of it is just simply because Taylor isn’t afraid to create content about things that most of Hollywood would shy away from or ignore. Taylor just goes for it. He’s not afraid to make a series about ranchers or the oil people in Texas,” he said, referring to Yellowstone and Landman. “You know, this is all the stuff that happens in the flyover states that Hollywood has ignored for years. He’s tapping into it, and in a big way. And so, of course, we want him and his input on this show, because this is what’s happening in the bars in the flyover states every single night, every single weekend.” And of course, there’s another plus: “He’s also incredibly muscle-y, which is sexy,” joked Shelton.

With a lot of the singing shows on television right now, contestants get to compete on polished stages with prompted audiences. With The Road, that isn’t the case. Twelve aspiring country musicians will hit the road alongside none other than Keith Urban, joining him as his opening act at venues across the country, attempting to win over the fans that have come to see him, and only those that do will move on to the next round, working toward their chance at coming out on top. Going from place to place on a tour bus, these singers will come face-to-face with the grittier side of tour life. Shelton, who had served as a mentor of The Voice for quite some time, felt inspired to step into the driver’s seat with this series.

“As much fun as I had being a coach on The Voice, there’s no way you can do a job for that long, or there’s no way for me to do a job for that long and not have ideas about it,” he explained. For example, Shelton liked the idea of contestants performing original songs, or taking them outside of a polished studio. While these might not have come to fruition on The Voice, patience proved to be key now that The Road has come along. Don’t miss the premiere on October 19 at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
