Blondshell’s Sabrina Teitelbaum is getting closer to the heart of things. In a recent social post, she confessed that “each time I get to do this the music ends up closer to what I intended. I feel so proud of the record and excited to show you.” She’s referring to her new album Violins, which she teased last month with “Heart Has To Work So Hard,” and now has an official release date on September 25 via Partisan Records. It was produced by Yves Rothman, mixed by Beatriz Artola, and mastered by Emily Lazar.
Alongside the album announcement, Teitelbaum has shared the title track and video directed by Sabra Binder. “Violins” is that brooding, thoughtful rock that we’ve come to love from Blondshell. There’s some killer lines like “Your battle song sounds like spit on a stranger.”
In the video, Teitelbaum paces around a room where there’s a blow dryer fixed on an ice sculpture of a fawn. The fawn is melting and bleeding, and she is trying to save it. The room is constructed of one-way mirrors, giving the sense that Teitelbaum is being watched. It recalls dark, surrealist conceptual work like Alexander McQueen, specifically his 2001 Spring/Summer show.
In a press release, Teitelbaum shared more about the single:
This song sums up the album in a lot of ways. When I was writing I felt really drawn to images of patience and kindness, for example putting your head on someone’s shoulder, alongside images of violence. I was also inspired by the idea of healing slowly and refusing to be rushed by any outside force. Things genuinely just take the time they take. I’m not at a point in life where I can have a no assholes policy yet, but I like the idea of weeding out people that aren’t going to let me have limitations.
