‘The Ordeal’ refers both to judgment — not necessarily divine — and to suffering. Any profound spiritual journey involves a form of trial; you cannot avoid that pain. Seeking to understand, to rise, to give meaning to our existence inevitably means confronting our own flaws and a certain inner anguish. But this pain is not in vain — it is essential to transformation and transcendence. Religion, and more broadly spirituality, is not torment in itself; it reflects the perpetual inner struggle between our shadows and our light.
