Bonnie Tyler, the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” songstress, has woken from her coma.
Tyler, 74, made headlines in May when news broke that she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal and was placed in an “induced coma.” Now, representatives for the Welsh singer have confirmed that she is conscious but still recovering from the ordeal.
“Bonnie’s family and team would like to update everyone on how she is progressing with her recovery,” Tyler’s manager Matt Davis tells Entertainment Weekly. “Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal. Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her Doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time.”
The statement continued, “As such we are sorry to tell everyone that we will be cancelling, or postponing until next year where possible, all of our remaining shows this summer. This will affect every current show until the end of August. At present we are still hopeful that our shows in the autumn will go ahead.”

Tyler had been scheduled to perform at the SummerLUST Music Festival in Għaxaq, Malta, on May 22, as well as a show in Wiesmoor, Germany, on May 30, and additionally had more than two dozen European concerts scheduled throughout 2026.
Her reps apologized to fans and promoters for the change, adding, “[We] trust that you will understand and bear with us in these difficult circumstances. We hope to see you next year instead.”
Tyler’s representatives concluded by thanking fans for the “outpouring of love and support,” noting that the singer is aware and “very grateful” for all the kind comments pouring in.
In early May, Davis told EW that the singer was placed in the induced coma “by her doctors to aid her recovery.” Prior to that, reps for the singer said the surgery “went well” and that she was “recuperating” from the health scare.
Despite the reassuring statement, fans worried that more tragic news was imminent, particularly as additional reports emerged claiming Tyler had gone into cardiac arrest after her doctors attempted to bring her out of the precautionary coma.
In a message shared to Tyler’s website on May 12, a representative shut down the “lurid and untrue” rumors hinting at the worst.
“As of this morning Bonnie remains seriously ill but stable in hospital in Faro, however her doctors are still positive that she will make a full recovery,” the statement read. “Bonnie’s family are very disappointed at the many lurid and untrue rumors now circulating in the media and would like to make it clear that Liberto Mealha does not represent them in any way whatsoever and is not in contact with them regarding Bonnie.”

Mealha is a purported friend of Tyler’s who has been quoted recently in media accounts of her health.
The statement continued, “When there is any further news of Bonnie’s condition then we will issue another statement but ask that the media cease to speculate or publish wild rumors, which simply serve to upset her family, friends, and many fans, and ask again for privacy and decency at this difficult time.”

The “Holding Out For a Hero” singer, known for her raspy vocals and emotional power ballads, has released 18 studio albums since breaking onto the pop scene in 1976. Her most recent album, The Best Is Yet to Come, debuted in 2021. She also released an autobiography, Straight From the Heart, in 2023.
The singer most recently performed live at a London concert in March.
