Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie went through an explosive and lengthy divorce after spending more than a decade together.
The couple started dating in 2004 before marrying 10 years later. Their marriage was short-lived, however, as Angelina filed for divorce from the Fight Club actor in 2016, with their split being finalized in December 2024.
Despite the toxic end to their relationship, author Brian J Robb, who wrote Brad Pitt: The Rise to Stardom, has suggested there was a time when the couple seemed to be “made for each other.” His comments come after Brad’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston admitted she gossips about the star with Gwyneth Paltrow.
Speaking exclusively to The Express US, Robb explained, “Both Jolie and Pitt were established stars by the time they paired up (professionally and personally) in 2005’s Mr & Mrs Smith.
“Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time (from 1998), with them seen as something of an ‘it’ couple, matching his film success with her TV success on Friends. As Pitt and Jolie became closer during the making of the film, the divorce of Pitt and Aniston was announced.”
The author pointed out how both the media and the public were quickly won over by Brad and Angelina’s romance.
“The press quickly dubbed the new romantic pairing ‘Brangelina’ – they were such an obvious made-for-each other couple, given their obvious personal chemistry, that the media and audiences couldn’t get enough of them, sparking ‘Brangelina fever,'” he explained.
Robb continued, “For a while, both Jolie and Pitt were able to prosper thanks to this audience goodwill, and both were able to secure their stardom,” before adding, “Of course, after a decade, it didn’t end so well…”
Brad and Angelina’s divorce was tumultuous, with Brad facing allegations of abuse during the proceedings. He has vehemently denied the allegations.

Despite the drama, the Interview With A Vampire actor has continued to enjoy a successful career.
Robb shared, “He’s escaped being too connected with these allegations as they were rightly seen as part of the contested divorce proceedings between Pitt and Jolie – they originated in an anonymous statement in 2016 about a possible altercation on a private plane, and didn’t reach the standard to justify a criminal charge, which might have changed matters.
“Pitt’s career continued to blossom as audiences loved to see him – an Oscar win for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood helped to cement his position as a popular leading man, a genuine movie star.
“Similarly, Jolie’s career was unaffected, with a move into directing. Their 12-year relationship fascinated audiences, but people were smart enough to recognise that claims during a divorce – from both parties – may be simply attacks designed to secure a legal position. Onscreen and off-screen are two different worlds…”
