The first wife of Brandon Blackstock has shared her first statement since the death of her ex-husband. Melissa Ashworth Wells, who was married to Blackstock for more than a decade before his romance with Kelly Clarkson, died on August 7.
On August 8, Ashworth Wells shared a pair of photos on her Instagram page and included a touching tribute to Blackstock. The first photo appeared to be fairly recent, while the second photo was from the former couple’s wedding day.
Ashworth Wells wrote, “On May 29, 1999 I married the man who would become the father of my children.”
She continued, “Brandon was full of charm, witt (sic), and just an absolute gentleman who happened to wear cowboy boots, wrangler jeans, and a cowboy hat.”
“He was by far, hands down, the best Daddy and Pa. He loved hard and fought hard,” Ashworth Wells added.
The family photo that Ashworth Wells shared first showed Blackstock with the two children he shared with her, Seth and Savannah, along with Savannah’s son, Lake, and husband Quentin Lee.
Ashworth Wells also wrote, “The best thing Brandon has left for his children is they know where he is. I’ve heard it said, ‘Nothing is lost when you know where it is’ and Brandon is with Jesus his Savior.”
“Savannah, Seth, and our grandchildren are the best parts of who Brandon and I are,” she noted.
As People noted, Blackstock and Ashworth Wells went their separate ways in 2012. Their son, Seth, is 18, and Savannah is 23.
A few weeks before Blackstock’s death, Savannah told him she was expecting his second grandchild. She and her husband anticipate welcoming a baby girl to their family in January 2026.
Ashworth Wells limited the ability to comment on her post, but several dozen people left notes filled with support and love.
“Sending many prayers for all of you for strength and comfort at this sad time. Rest in Peace Brandon,” one comment read.
A family acquaintance wrote, “My heart is so broken. We were blessed to know Brandon. He was a great friend to us and often treated my girls like his own. Your children are amazing. We are praying for everyone.”
