It’s been a complicated year for Brandon Claybon’s Beyond the Gates character Martin Richardson. From political ambitions to family secrets, the character has faced some of the show’s most intense storylines yet.
The actor recently appeared on Fox 5 DC’s Good Day 10 to discuss his experience working on the CBS daytime drama and reflect on Martin’s eventful year.
When asked what storyline he’d like to see for Martin, Claybon smiled and said, “For [me], I would like to see Martin run for president again,” referencing an early storyline on Beyond the Gates where Martin spoke about his interest in running for the presidency.
“Now I know everybody was saying before, everything that Martin has been through, it is just a lot, how does he think he’s going to be President?” Claybon joked.
To say that Martin has had an intense year would be an understatement. Earlier this season, the character was forced to confront a dark secret from his past. Years ago, Martin killed a man in self-defense while protecting his grandfather Vernon (Clifton Davis), in a sundown town. His family helped covered up the murder, as well as the brutal attack on the victim’s brother. But his past came back to haunt him when the brother arrived in Fairmont Crest and began terrorizing Martin through his family. With the help of Joey Armstrong, the immediate threat was handled. However, if the events of that fateful night were to be made public, Martin’s presidential campaign could be derailed at any moment.
Reflecting on why he believes Martin can still chase his presidential dream, Claybon shared an inspiring perspective, “I think it starts with a thought,” he said. “You know, one thing in your head, you make a plan, and if that’s what you want to do, you go after it full force, so I say Martin needs to continue to change the world.”
Viewers can stay tuned to Beyond the Gates airing weekdays on CBS and streaming weeknights on Paramount+ to see if Martin’s presidential dreams become a reality.
You can also catch up on all of the drama from the beginning on Paramount+ or Pluto TV’s dedicated 24/7 streaming fast channel for Beyond the Gates.
