The painting is based on a story from a medieval Danish folk ballad called Fæstemanden dør, preserved through oral tradition and later recorded by Axel Olrik and Svend Grundtvig. In the ballad, a rich young man named Sir Oluf lies on his deathbed and summons his betrothed to have a word with him. When she arrives, he surprises her by taking out an iron chest and bequeathing her his treasures. His mother, watching this, scolds him, telling him not to give her so much and to think of his siblings instead. Sir Oluf replies that his siblings have plenty of wealth, but his betrothed will be left with nothing. Soon after, Oluf dies, and overcome by grief, both Kirsten (his betrothed) and Sir Oluf’s mother die as well.
The painting itself is full of symbolism and interesting details: The crucifix seems to point to faith and the hope of salvation. The branches on ground outside the room are fir branches, used in Danish funeral customs. Finally, the boat in the distance invokes both the common metaphor of a journey to the afterlife and the ancient Nordic tradition of interring the dead in boats.
