During the latest round of Entertainment Weekly‘s “Lie vs. Lie,” Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen proved that the truth is so much stranger than fiction when the game led them to share some hilarious real-life anecdotes.
At one point, Rogen was asked to tell his The Invite costar and director about the “most surprising proposition” he’s ever received — and the answer was so insane that Wilde could barely contain her laughter.
“I’m glad I didn’t do this,” Rogen prefaced the story. “Many years ago, me and my wife were at The French Laundry, one of the fanciest restaurants in the world, and at the table beside us was… Puff Daddy.”
The mention of the now-disgraced rapper, Sean “Diddy” Combs — who is currently serving prison time for prostitution-related charges — earned a big reaction from Wilde, who paused, closed her eyes, and pressed her lips together to hold back laughter.
Rogen continued, “Puff Daddy came over to me and my wife and he said, ‘What are you guys doing tomorrow morning?’ And we said, ‘We’re here actually scouting wedding locations.’ And he said, ‘Well, if you have time, would you like to come hot air ballooning with me?'”
Rogen affirmed that the story is true, and much to his present relief, he declined the offer, noting, “The last thing I need in the world is a photo of me on a hot air balloon alone with Puff Daddy, waving and smiling and holding glasses of rosé.”
Elsewhere in the game, Wilde recounted a time she cooked for company, only for “the unexpected” to occur. In her case, it involved her dog jumping up on the table to eat her freshly-cooked Thanksgiving turkey.
Rogen immediately dinged the story as a lie, to which Wilde exclaimed, “This is true! It’s true— Paco stood on the table and ate the turkey.”
“It reeks a bit of ’90s kids movie,” Rogen defended.
The subject of strange propositions and dinner parties gone wrong is a fitting query, given the drama unfolding in The Invite, which stars Wilde and Rogen as Angela and Joe, a couple whose marital issues are laid bare during a chaotic dinner with their upstairs neighbors. As the night spirals and arguments break out — including tension over neighbors Hawk (Edward Norton) and Piña’s (Penélope Cruz) active sex lives — an enticing offer is presented to Joe and Angela that could reignite the spark missing from their relationship.

During EW’s “Lie vs. Lie” game, Rogen offered his own memory of an awkward dinner confrontation, recounting a tense face-to-face with Pharrell Williams. Rogen explained that, while doing press for the live-action remake of The Lion King, he told reporters that Pharrell — who produced several songs for the movie — kept getting frustrated with his singing. And the “Happy” singer didn’t appreciate him sharing those moments with the public.

“He was like, ‘Hey, I don’t like how you suggest that I got frustrated with your singing,'” Rogen recalled. “And I was like, ‘You did.’ And he’s like, ‘I don’t like you suggesting that I feel frustration.’ And I was like, ‘You’re doing it right now.'”
Will Rogen sharing this story prove to be another point of frustration for Pharrell? Only time will tell.
The Invite opens in select theaters on June 26, followed by a wider nationwide release on July 10.
