Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music has announced the appointment of US double bassist Edwin Barker as its new visiting professor of music in double bass, beginning 1 August this year.
Barker studied with Henry Portnoi at the New England Conservatory and with teachers including Peter Mercurio, Richard Stephan, Angelo LaMariana and David Perleman. At age 22, he became the principal double bassist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a role he performed for almost 50 years.
Barker was selected by Sir Georg Solti to lead the bass section of the United Nations’ Musicians of the World in 1995, and last year he was the recipient of the International Society of Bassists’ Distinguished Achievement Award.
As an educator, Barker is associate professor at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, he has served as chairman of instrumental and orchestral studies at the Tanglewood Music Center and taught at University of Maryland’s National Orchestral Institute.
