I need it now.
This evening, Riley Green teased an unreleased new song on Instagram called “Imagine That,” which is right in his wheelhouse in terms of country heartbreak heaters, as he reflects on a relationship that didn’t work out and pines for things to be different.
He asks the girl he can’t stop thinking about to imagine that there’s a boy that’s “just dying to get you back,” which of course, is really him, and it’s a great play on words and really cool concept:
“Damn I can’t believe that you picked up the phone,
It’s late at night, I bet your’e wondering why the hell I want
I just called to let you know that you’re the only always on my mind,
See if there’s a chance in hell you want to see my tonight
Before you make up your mind
Imagine there’s a four wheel drive
Waiting right outside that’s ready to drive a thousand miles
Or just ride around a while
Imagine there’s a full moon shining light on a poor fool
That ready to make things right
Even if it takes all night
And that old boy’s just dying to get you back
Imagine that
Can you imagine that”
Riley is so good at these kinds of clever, yet simple, songs, and of course, the reference to Willie Nelson’s “Always On My Mind” is my favorite part. In the caption, Riley shared that new music is “coming soon,” and he’s actually teased a few different songs on Instagram over the last several months, so I have to imagine these all might be part of a forthcoming album.
Riley is so good at these kinds of sad country songs, and it sounds like he’s got another great one on his hands. Check it out:
Riley has released two great albums in the last several years, Ain’t My Last Rodeo and Don’t Mind If I Do, and he’s cementing himself as one of the best in mainstream country with the unique ability to honor the roots of country music and that classic sounds most of us first fell in love with, while also giving the content of his songs a modern twist with relatable subject matter that is simply timeless.
Here’s another one called “Just Me”:
My favorite so far still has to be “My Way”:
In addition to seemingly working on new music, Riley is about to kick off his Cowboy As It Gets Tour in about ten days, and his highly anticipated appearance in the new series Marshals is coming up this month, too.
