A new revelation from Britney Spears’ former husband has reignited public interest in one of pop culture’s most talked-about relationships. Spears allegedly called Justin Timberlake the night before her 2004 wedding, Kevin Federline claimed, reigniting discussion about their complicated past.

Kevin Federline claimed Britney Spears called Justin Timberlake the night before their 2004 wedding to say her “final piece.”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Oct. 14, Federline said Spears reached out to Timberlake, from whom she had split two years earlier, to ensure their past relationship had fully ended. “I thought she was talking to her mom,” he recalled. “And she told me she was on the phone with Justin.”
Federline, 47, said he offered to cancel the wedding if Spears was uncertain. “I just kind of stepped back like, ‘Did I just hear you right?’” he said. She told me that she “wanted to make sure that everything is done. I’m like, ‘Damn. On the night before our wedding, this is what you decide to do?’” He added that he “took it with a grain of salt,” assuming she was “closing a chapter” of her life.
Spears and Timberlake dated from 1999 to 2002. In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears revealed that she became pregnant with Timberlake’s baby and chose to have an abortion, writing, “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it.” In 2021, Timberlake publicly apologized to Spears following backlash over his song “Cry Me a River” and past behavior.
Federline will release his memoir You Thought You Knew on Oct. 21. In an excerpt published by The New York Times, he expressed concern about Spears’ “situation,” which he believes is “racing toward something irreversible.” Federline and Spears married in 2004, divorced in 2007, and share two sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19.
A representative for Spears issued a statement: “All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism.” Federline said his book aims to give his children context about his life, noting, “Every step that I’ve taken has been for the benefit of my children.”
