INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — WISH-TV is your home for high school football, and every week Greg Rakestraw from the ISC Broadcast Network joins “Daybreak” to break down our “Game of the Week.” 🏈
Week 9 is a matchup between the reigning state champions and top ranked Brownsburg and 11th ranked Hamilton Southeastern. The bulldogs (8-0) are hosting the royals (5-3).
Rake’s Take on Brownsburg:
Rakestraw says Brownsburg is a team trying to go for an undefeated regular season, and hopefully a clean sweep at Hoosier Crossroads Conference play.
“It’s a Brownsburg team that largely brought their offense back in total from last year’s state championship team,” Rake explained. “Oscar Frye is a Division I level recruit. He’s just a junior. They’ve got great playmakers on the outside, led by Brandon Sharpe, who is their leading receiver. Really, three different running backs that have gotten the job done: (Aiden) Jobe, (Brady) Lewis, and (Shakovon) Sumpterbey, throughout the course of the season.”
Brownsburg has had some concerns on the defense, though, but have seemingly gotten better as the season goes on.
“The last time we had them on My-Indy TV 23, they gave up 47 points and still won the game and beating the rival in Avon. But that was back in Week 4. So, Brownsburg, Carmel, and maybe just a tick behind them, Center Grove. Those are considered to be the three best teams in the area, three best teams in the state.”
Rake’s Take on HSE:
“For HSE, they have kind of had to go younger not by design because of how things have played out,” Rake said. “Terry Walker (III) was a transfer from Lawrence Central heading into the season for Hamilton Southeastern. He’s a Duke recruited quarterback, and unfortunately, a knee injury cost him his season through Week 4. So, they have gone with a freshman quarterback in Deaken Johnson.”
Rake says he thinks the key for HSE is if they can get the ball in the hands of their best playmaker. “Kendrick Pennybaker as a wide receiver averaging over 20 yards a catch.”
He continued, saying ground game has been “kind of hit or miss.”
“(Carter) Reed is their leading rusher on the season for HSE. But really, I think it’s about their defense. Can you do something that maybe only Westfield has done so far this year and really slow down Brownsburg offensively? I think this game’s going to come down to, can HSE get a few stops? If they can do that, they’ll give themselves a chance.”
