Before fans are able to see Jeremy Allen White play Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, the rocker didn’t hold back while sharing his real thoughts on the actor’s portrayal of him.

“I want to thank everybody for coming out to see our film tonight and our crew, a great cast,” Springsteen, 76, told the crowd following a screening of the film at the New York Film Festival on September 28. “Jeremy Allen White for putting his whole heart and soul into the part, just such a wonderful job, and for playing a much better looking version of me.”

Springsteen went on to add that he’s “really thankful for that.”

Deliver Me from Nowhere tells the story of the writing and producing process for Springsteen’s 1982 Nebraska album “when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past,” according to the film’s official synopsis.

During the same event, White, 34, spoke to People about what it was like to play the iconic singer. He event revealed that he asked Springsteen “really directly, ‘Why this film? Why this period?’” when preparing for the role. “And even what happened on this journey, on this road trip in really specific moments. And he was immediately so honest,” he shared.

“He talked to me about a panic attack he’d had, and he described it to me as in this moment he felt like he was like a voyeur in his own life,” White said. “He was an observer. He felt so outside of himself, and he told me that story, and that’s a feeling I’m familiar with.”

White added, “I think I’m always trying to find some presence in my own life, and I worked very hard at it every day. And when he told me that story and made me familiar with that feeling, I knew there was a tether that I could explore there.”

Meanwhile, Springsteen previously revealed what he was like to watch White play him while on set of the film. “I’m sure it’s much worse for the actor than for me,” he told Rolling Stone in a June interview. “Jeremy Allen White was very, very tolerant of me the days that I would appear on the set.”

He then recalled telling White, “Look, anytime I’m in the way, just give me the look and I’m on my way home. The days that I got out there, he was wonderfully tolerant with me being there. And it was just fun. It was enjoyable.”

However, the “Born in the U.S.A” singer did admit to experiencing “some unusualness” in the filming process because the biopic “involves, in some ways, some of the most painful days of my life.”

“If there was a scene coming up that was sometimes really deeply personal, I wanted the actors to feel completely free, and I didn’t want to get in the way, and so I would just stay at home,” he said.

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere will be released in theaters on October 24.
