Emma Heming Willis has candidly shared her feelings of isolation following her husband Bruce Willis’ diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia.
Bruce, 67, was diagnosed with the heartbreaking condition in 2022, leaving Emma, 49, grappling with maintaining his privacy while also caring for their children. The couple shares two daughters, Mable, 13, and Evelyn, 11.
Now, Emma is opening up about the challenges she faced in coming to terms with Bruce’s condition.
Tragically, Bruce’s condition has deteriorated to the point where he can no longer speak or walk.
Initially, he was diagnosed with aphasia before receiving a full FTD diagnosis a few months later.
His extended family, including ex-wife Demi Moore, 62, and their daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31, have all rallied around him in support.
Despite this, Emma found it difficult to manage her own emotions surrounding the situation.
She confessed to PEOPLE, “Early on, I was very isolated. I was too scared to say anything to anyone. I was in so much sadness and darkness for so long.”
By the time Bruce was diagnosed, Emma had already assumed the role of his full-time caregiver.
She reflected, “I think for most [people], by the time you get to a diagnosis, you are already in that role.”
However, Emma also admitted that the diagnosis brought some relief, as it provided an explanation for the changes she had been noticing in Bruce.

She shared,”There was relief in understanding, ‘Oh, okay, this wasn’t my husband, it was that this disease was taking parts of his brain.'”.
Emma also spoke about finding solace in her work, reaching out to others in similar situations, advocating for them and raising awareness about FTD. Despite the ongoing heartbreak as Bruce’s condition worsens, she has found a way to still “enjoy” life.
She expressed, “While the grief and sadness and trauma is here all the time, I have learned it’s okay for me to also enjoy our life. Bruce would want that for me and for our kids, to not wallow in the sadness of it, but also rise to it.”
Emma recently revealed that she had moved Bruce into a single-story home with a full-time care team, as managing his welfare and their daughters’ wellbeing had become increasingly challenging.
