Happy Canada Day! Every year on July 1, Canada celebrates the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, which brought together the provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single unified country. One person celebrating is Bryan Adams, the veteran rock singer-songwriter and proud Canuck.
Adams, an Ontario native and a member of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, has released a new song today called “51st State” rebuking Donald Trump over his efforts to annex Canada into the United States of America. “Let me give it to ya straight,” Adams sings. “When you’re talkin’ ’bout my home/ You better show some respect/ ‘Cause up here, we take care of our own.”
In a written statement, Adams explains, “I wanted to write something about Canada because Canada is home. There is more that binds us than divides us. This is a tribute to the pride and spirit of my fellow Canadians – the rest is just noise.” Listen below.
There are many ridiculous aspects of Trump’s desire to absorb Canada, but the idea that the entirety of the country would be lumped together into one state has always been the most ridiculous to me. They would instantly dominate the House and be comically under-represented in the Senate. Wouldn’t it be each of the 10 provinces becoming a separate state? Anyway, the point is moot; it’s not going to happen.
