The cybercrime investigation involving BTS member Jungkook has made significant progress following the extradition of an alleged leader of a global hacking group by South Korean authorities. On May 13, it was reported that a 40-year-old Chinese national had been extradited from Bangkok, Thailand, and arrived at Incheon International Airport. This information was disclosed by South Korea’s Ministry of Justice and National Police Agency, as per local media reports. Authorities confirmed that the cyber investigation unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has initiated interrogations and intends to seek an arrest warrant after reviewing the evidence collected.

Investigators claim that the suspect orchestrated and managed a complex overseas hacking network operating in various countries, including Thailand. From August 2023 to April 2025, the group allegedly infiltrated websites of budget mobile carriers and other online services, stealing sensitive personal data that was subsequently used to unlawfully access victims’ financial and cryptocurrency accounts.

The case has garnered significant attention in South Korea, as the list of victims reportedly includes celebrities, affluent business individuals, corporate executives, startup CEOs, and legal professionals. Among the most notable targets was BTS member Jungkook.

Authorities disclosed that in January 2024, shortly after Jungkook commenced his military service, hackers allegedly exploited his identity to create fraudulent brokerage accounts and attempted to misappropriate 33,500 HYBE shares valued at approximately 8.4 billion KRW, or around $5.6 million USD. Fortunately, the attempted theft did not lead to actual financial losses, as HYBE and its subsidiary BigHit Music swiftly identified suspicious activity and halted the transactions before the shares could be transferred or sold.

Misappropriated funds and assets

The hacking group is accused of extracting over 38 billion KRW from numerous victims through unauthorized withdrawals and digital asset theft. Officials characterized the operation as one of the most severe international cybercrime cases investigated in recent years, due to both the extent of the financial damage and the high-profile nature of the victims involved.

South Korean authorities have already apprehended several individuals associated with the organization. Another alleged leader, a 36-year-old Chinese national, was extradited from Thailand in August 2025. He was formally charged in September and is currently undergoing trial while remaining in custody.

A spokesperson for the Seoul police highlighted that due to the crimes’ “considerable social impact,” the investigation will be conducted with the highest level of diligence to ensure that all domestic and international members of the group are held accountable.
