Representatives of Buckingham Palace and the Prince are known to be in talks over his future at Royal Lodge, from which he cannot legally be evicted under the terms of his “cast-iron” lease with the Crown Estate.
In the face of public pressure, and the prospect of further investigation from Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and the National Audit Office, Prince Andrew is expected to reach a settlement over his living arrangements imminently. A source has described the likelihood of Prince Andrew leaving Royal Lodge as “if not, when”.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not commented on the option of Prince Andrew moving into Frogmore Cottage. In 2019, the Duke paid an estimated £2.4m in renovation costs when they moved to the US. The couple retained Frogmore as their UK base for several years, but it is now vacant.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are set to move from Adelaide Cottage to the larger Forest Lodge soon.
Both properties are in Windsor and part of the Crown Estate, raising questions over how either Prince Andrew or his ex-wife would fund an estimated £15,000 and £6,000 rent per month respectively.
