Buckingham Palace loses spotlight as royal family moves outside London

The Royal Family is preparing to move a major part of its operations from Buckingham Palace to Windsor, in another indication that the monarchy’s centre of gravity is shifting away from London.

The Sunday Times reports that the Royal Mews – responsible for royal transport, including horses, carriages and state vehicles – will relocate early next year. The Mews has been based at Buckingham Palace since the late 1700s.

Buckingham Palace has not been a primary residence since Queen Elizabeth II moved to Windsor during the pandemic.

The building is also undergoing a major renovation, and King Charles and Queen Camilla have made clear they prefer to remain at Clarence House while in London.

Prince William and Catherine have recently moved into Forest Lodge in Windsor, described as their “forever home.” They are expected to stay there even when William becomes king.

This makes Windsor a more practical base for the Royal Mews’ staff, horses and ceremonial carriages.

Windsor taking on a larger role

Windsor Castle has hosted state visits, banquets and major receptions in recent months, while Buckingham Palace continues to be refurbished.

The move formalises what has already become routine: many core royal activities are now centred in the Windsor estate.

Sources told The Times that the King does not intend to live at Buckingham Palace.

One said Charles views it as “not fit for purpose in the modern world.” Camilla reportedly shares that view, and Prince William is also understood to feel the palace is unsuitable for modern family life.

Historic appointment

The relocation comes as King Charles appoints Col Erica Bridge as the Royal Family’s first female crown equerry.

A 30-year Army veteran, she will oversee royal travel, the stables and all ceremonial carriage processions. She will replace Col Toby Browne, who steps down after 15 years.
