On Tuesday, Dame Meg, the chairman of the Treasury committee, suggested MPs could look into the Crown Estate’s handling of the lease.
She told the BBC: “Where money flows, particularly where taxpayers’ money is involved, or taxpayers’ interests are involved, Parliament has a responsibility to have a light shine upon that and we need to have answers.”
Lisa Smart, the Lib Dems’ Cabinet Office spokesman, said: “Andrew has failed our King and Royal family and betrayed the values of the British people.
“The longer this whole sorry saga goes on, the more his presence in public life is an insult and increasingly an embarrassment. He should show some contrition by returning every penny of rent that he’s not paid while disgracing his office.”
Amy Wallace, the co-writer of Nobody’s Girl, told BBC Newsnight that Giuffre would have welcomed the Prince’s relinquishing of his titles.
Ms Wallace said: “I know that she would view it as a victory that he was forced by whatever means to voluntarily give them up. For many, maybe particularly in the United States, but maybe even in the UK, it’s a symbolic gesture but it’s an important one.”
