The way films used to be made earlier is very different from how filmmakers approach projects now and David Dhawan understands that better than anyone else. The eras of filmmaking have changed. From action movies to romantic blockbusters, everything had its own time to shine.
What changed the most was how women were approached. From being extensions of male characters to being plot-progressing tools to finally being seen as individual characters. It has been a long journey, one that is still in the process.
David Dhawan on Writing Women in Films
Varun Dhawan and David Dhawan sat down for a special father-son interaction organised by PVR Inox, where they discussed all things cinema. The director has given Bollywood some of its most iconic comedy films, but even he knows that as times change, so should one’s approach.
“You can’t degrade women in films today. If you do so, the censor board will hand you a long list of restrictions. So, I was a little careful and sensitive towards women characters, while with the men, I can still do anything onscreen.”
A big part of that came with how he portrayed women in his film. The Censor Board now has a lot of restrictions and rules that must be followed to ensure that women are being respected in films without demeaning or humiliating the gender or intellectual individuality.
“You get tired, but you never get tired of making films. I’ve made so many movies that I can still make four more, but sometimes health has to be prioritised, and you also need time for family.”
He also talked about his career. David Dhawan’s films have spanned decades. Some became massive hits at the box office, but others failed to impress audiences. Some became cult classics later, while others aged poorly. It is a balance; one he has grown to appreciate.
Having worked on so many films, entertaining fans and shaping the comedy genre in Bollywood, he doesn’t mind shifting his focus now. With age, his priorities are also changing. His health is asking for his attention a lot more than any other movie could and thus, stepping back doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.
