Japanese artists gave performances of traditional musical instruments on Friday at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
It’s part of a series of events this month focusing on Japanese music and musicians.
The audience listened intently to solemn sounds of instruments played by musicians using “tsuzumi” hand drums, a zither-like “koto”, and a “shakuhachi” bamboo flute, among others.
Accompanied by the music, kabuki actor Nakamura Hayato and others performed, delighting the audience.
Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson described the relationship with Japan as special, and the most important bilateral relationship in the world for America.
He added that the culture is so different that it really matters that people have the chance to explore and understand more about Japan.
A student in his 20s praised the performances as “one of the best shows” he has ever seen. He said the experience will help him in the future as he currently studies fashion design, including Japanese attire.
