Carson Daly Reveals Why He and Daughter Etta ‘Never Speak’

Carson Daly, co-host of Today, is opening up about his unique relationship with his 13-year-old daughter Etta.

Daly, who is also the host of The Voice, shares four children with his wife of over 10 years, Siri Pinter. In addition to Etta, they include Jack, 17, London, 11, and Goldie, 6.

While appearing on a segment of Today With Jenna and Sheinelle on Monday, Daly revealed that he rarely speaks to his daughter Etta. However, it is not for the reason that many may think.

“I have a 13-year-old, Etta, who is doing great, who I never speak with,” he said. “Do you speak 13-year-old? Cause I don’t.”

While there is no conflict between the father and daughter, Daly has found that he and his daughter have a preferred way of communicating with one another rather than speaking face to face at this point in life. That preferred method is through the popular app Snapchat.

Daly shared a recent photo of Etta after receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church.

“There she is, Confirmed … so, she’s in God’s hands now,” he said, drawing a laugh from the audience.

He then explained why he has found Snapchat to be the most effective way to communicate with his daughter.

“You ever hear that phrase, ‘You’ve got to meet kids where they are?’ You hear it in business a lot, right? They want to advertise, get in front of them,” he explained. “I’ve taken a page out of that, and six months ago, I did join Snapchat,” he continued. “I have literally communicated with my daughter, in particular, more via Snapchat than I have in real life.”

Daly’s communication with his daughter involves a lot of emojis, rather than an in-depth conversation. However, he expressed that he’s happy to take what he can get.

“I can say, ‘Are you okay?’ And then I’ll put some stupid emoji,” he said. “And she’ll write back, like, ‘LOL,’ and all these little things are flying all over the screen. As silly as it is, I am connected a little bit.”
