Miley Cyrus revealed that she rescued a 20-year-old tortoise from the shelter system through Wags and Walks

Miley Cyrus just welcomed an “unexpected” new addition to her family.
On Sunday, May 24, the singer-songwriter, 33, revealed that she rescued a huge 20-year-old African spurred tortoise — also known as a sulcata tortoise — named Teru with help from Wags and Walks, a nonprofit dog rescue dedicated to saving at-risk dogs and helping them find loving homes.
“Welcome home, Teru,” Cyrus wrote on her Instagram Stories alongside a photo of her feeding Teru chunks of a yellow bell pepper.
While Wags and Walks doesn’t normally specialize in tortoises, it decided to rescue their first one after hearing that the “Flowers” singer was hoping to add one of the animals to her family.

“You truly never know who you’ll find in a shelter🤍,” the rescue wrote on Instagram. “When we heard that @mileycyrus was hoping to adopt a tortoise, we knew we had to make the connection happen. After a little coordination, the stars aligned, and Teru officially found his forever home with Miley.”
Before settling into his new home, Teru was living in the shelter system, which the nonprofit claims is unusual but not unheard of.
“As unexpected as this rescue was, it’s also a reminder of the reality shelters are facing right now,” Wags and Walks added in the caption. “Animals of all kinds are ending up in overcrowded systems, and more pets than ever are in need of safe places to go.”

Just two weeks before rescuing Teru, the nonprofit pulled 29 dogs from a high-intake shelter, where severe overcrowding put many of the animals at risk of euthanasia.
“The need continues to grow every day,” the nonprofit wrote. “We’re grateful to everyone who supports rescue, chooses adoption, and helps make more second chances possible.”
Cyrus’ latest adoption comes just days after she celebrated another big milestone — getting her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And her loved ones — including her mom Tish Cyrus, her sister Brandi Cyrus and fiancé Maxx Morando — were all there to support her during the ceremony.
“To my family, my future family, parents, my mom, my siblings, my friends, my collaborators, thank you for loving and supporting not only the choices that I make, but my fears, and then facing them with me,” Miley said with tears in her eyes. “Today is something that I’ll never forget, and I’m always going to cherish. I love you all so much, thank you.”
