The Kansas City Royals have an intriguing farm system, as the ball club features a number of talented prospects. The Royals’ official top 30 prospect list from MLB.com was recently revealed. The entire list can be seen on MLB.com, but today we will take a look at the team’s top five prospects.

Catcher Carter Jensen is once again ranked No. 1 overall. The 22-year-old is MLB-ready and has displayed signs of potential. While Salvador Perez is still the Royals catcher, Jensen is expected to serve as the designated hitter in 2026. He will likely be the backup catcher as well.

Jensen’s offense is what stands out. He provides all-around hitting prowess, with his power from the left side of the plate catching the most attention.

Another catcher in Blake Mitchell checks in at No. 2 overall. Mitchell, 21, has an MLB ETA set for 2027. He also offers power and is a good defensive backstop. While he’s not quite big league ready, Mitchell’s defense could help him challenge Jensen for the catcher of the future title at some point in the future.

Right-handed pitcher Kendry Chourio and left-handed pitcher David Shields are No. 3 and No. 4 overall. Chourio, 18, and Shields, 19, both have MLB ETAs set for 2029. They may not be all that close to the big league level, but both pitchers feature high ceilings.

Chourio throws hard but also has good command — which is somewhat rare for a young hard-throwing pitcher. Shields’ strengths are his offspeed pitches and his command of the strike zone.

Finally, 19-year-old Sean Gamble is the Royals’ No. 5 overall prospect. He is an outfielder/second baseman who has a balanced all-around game. He can hit and field at a respectable level, while he runs especially well. It seems as if he may be best-suited to primarily focus on the outfield, but featuring an element of defensive versatility is never a problem.

As a small-market ball club, drafting and developing players is of the utmost importance for the Royals. Kansas City is rarely going to sign superstars in free agency, so developing a core of players who come through the team’s farm system is crucial. The MLB team currently features a strong core of players, but some of these top prospects could help matters sooner rather than later.

As mentioned, Carter Jensen is expected to already play a significant role in 2026.
