Cash Cobain has thrown cold water on speculation that JAY-Z is preparing to drop a new studio album.
The Bronx producer and rapper took to X with an update that seemingly shuts down the chatter. “When I was on the phone with Hov he said that he is absolutely not dropping an album. That messed me up though,” he typed on X.
The young hitmaker’s comment comes as a surprise, particularly since he previously suggested that a major return from the rap icon was imminent. During an appearance on Billboard Unfiltered Live, Cobain predicted that new material was on the horizon.
“The king of New York is JAY-Z… Multi-platinum albums [and] president of Def Jam. He’s like the richest rapper, right? What didn’t he do?…I heard JAY-Z is about to drop some sh*t that’s gonna shake the world. That’s what I heard.”
Cobain’s shift in tone adds another layer to the ongoing speculation surrounding Hov’s recording future. While the billionaire mogul has not released a solo album since 2017’s 4:44, close collaborators insist he remains actively engaged in music, even if not publicly.
Memphis Bleek hinted at possible collaborations during an appearance on Drink Champs. “I just was with him [Hov] in Vegas. He just came out on the show, like, yo, my ni**a, they went stupid. I said, ‘Listen, I know you working. Save me a verse.’ He’s like, ‘Alright, I got you.’ So if it happens, it happens,” he continued.
Producer The Alchemist echoed those sentiments in a conversation with Complex, praising JAY-Z’s continued connection to rap’s pulse.
“The thing about Jay, he is tapped in to everything. From the under to the over, which blew my mind when we were able to connect. He knows everything. He’s still a lyricist at heart. [Don’t let] none of those billions of dollars confuse you. [He] cares and knows about the lowest underground to the highest top. He’s got it all, he’s Jay,” he insisted.
Whether or not a full album is truly off the table, Cobain’s update confirms that for now, fans eager for a Hov comeback may have to keep waiting.
