Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s highly publicized relationship may resemble a modern fairy tale, but one relationship expert says there are real lessons that singles can take away from the couple’s journey.
“Taylor and Travis make the perfect power couple and are a lesson and an inspiration to all singles looking for love and their person,” says Susan Trombetti, matchmaker and CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking. The celebrity matchmaker said that despite their global fame — a pop icon and a football hero — “these two are just a boy and a girl looking for their person though and have finally found each other.”
“Until Travis, it appears she has been just as unlucky in love and relatable as the rest of the single women out there,” she says, “so what did Travis and Taylor do differently this time?”
According to Trombetti, commitment begins with time and consistency.
“Don’t invest in someone or chase someone that doesn’t respect or invest the same amount of time,” she says. “Tell the person what you want out of the relationship, whether it is a long-term relationship or marriage. You don’t have to do it on the first date but definitely before becoming exclusive. Choose your partner every day by supporting them and their goals, and make sure to make time for them. Doesn’t sound like much, but that’s the secret.”
Trombetti points out that, like many women, Taylor was likely hoping for a proposal from her last long-term boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, but it never materialized.
“She hitched her wagon to a lot of guys that never really pursued her it seemed, or appeared as interested,” Trombetti says. “Travis was different and he absolutely pursued her and wanted this as much as she did. He was smitten. He took a chance at love and had just the right amount of cockiness and confidence to let it be known that he wanted to date her, and he did it publicly. It worked. They both chose each other.”
And although Travis clearly pursued Taylor, once they were together, they both put in the effort to show up for and celebrate each other.
“Always make sure your person invests as much in your relationship as you do and is as supportive as Taylor and Travis are of each other,” Trombetti says. “They definitely should be the example here for your couple goals when it comes down to supporting each other.”
Clear communication also played a role in their path to engagement.
“As a takeaway for singles, judging by his father’s comments that she was getting antsy over the engagement, you can assume she made it known she was looking for marriage,” Trombetti says.
“You simply must unapologetically communicate your wants and needs in a relationship while not attempting to change someone’s mind who doesn’t want the same things or is unsure,” she says. “This is a mistake many singles make. This is how you wind up in five-year relationships not knowing if the person is going to commit.”
Trombetti believes several deeper factors point to the couple’s long-term compatibility.
“This marriage will work because these two have lifestyle compatibility and come from very supportive families, similar ambition, and are at the top of their careers,” she says. “Your relationship will go the distance if you, too, choose your partner everyday and make sure you both want the same things in life.”
