President Donald Trump and King Charles have been seen vying for power during the British monarch’s visit to the US.
The pair were photographed greeting one another on Monday, April 27, as King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived for their state visit.
Analyzing a video clip and images of the pair greeting one another, Beth said, “Super interesting! I love the upturned palm from Donald Trump – that is such a strong symbol of ‘peace’ and ‘nothing to hide.'”
His intention is to connect and show familiarity. King Charles, however, is resisting, and his intention is not to be submissive. He doesn’t want to dominate either but he doesn’t want to appear submissive, hence the strong resistance from him.”
Beth then explained her interpretation further, adding, “Handshakes are psychologically loaded interactions. When we observe a ‘push–pull’ dynamic, as in this case with King Charles and Donald Trump, where it resembles a tug of war, it is not accidental. It typically reflects a real-time negotiation of power and intent between two individuals.
“What we are seeing here is King Charles maintaining a firm grip while Donald Trump attempts to draw him into his own space. King Charles is resisting by pulling his hand back and this can be read as an attempt to control the interaction and avoid being dominated. It suggests that Charles is asserting his authority through resistance and positioning. He is not allowing Donald Trump to pull him into his [Trump’s] space.”
She continued, “A push–pull handshake often signals a battle for control. Pulling someone closer can indicate an attempt to lead and assert dominance, or create forced familiarity. This pull is what we’re seeing from Donald Trump. However, the pull we’re seeing from King Charles is more about resisting than asserting dominance. However, the result looks like a mini tussle, as neither man yields control.
“This dynamic can also arise from mismatched intentions. One person may be aiming for connection and familiarity. I think this is what Donald Trump is doing as he holds his hand out and has his palm upwards, as King Charles gets out of the car and moves towards him – this is a typical gesture of peace – in fact we use the expression ‘showing our hand’ to mean we’re not concealing anything.”
She then again stressed that Charles was keen not to appear submissive to President Trump, “King Charles looks tense and keeps his eyes on Donald Trump, and his shoulders are rigid. He wants to be sure that his authority is not undermined. The tension created by the handshake is not necessarily hostile, but it reveals a lack of alignment in how each person defines the interaction. One is trying to connect [Trump] and the other is trying to resist and not to be submissive [Charles].”
