Charli XCX’s latest single “Wink Wink” is here.
The song also received the music video treatment. The clip is directed by Charli’s longtime collaborator Aidan Zamiri and features creative direction by another of the singer’s frequent collaborators, Imogene Strauss. In the song, Charli promises she’s no longer “a bad girl” — a promise she then mitigates with the titular eye movement.
“Wink Wink” follows the pop star’s previous singles, “Rock Music” and “SS26.” All three tracks are set to appear on her forthcoming album, Music, Fashion Film.
The LP, slated to arrive on July 24, follows a whirlwind year that saw Charli score Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights film, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, and appear in her own movie, A24’s The Moment, also directed by Zamiri.
The 33-year-old discussed crossing over from music to film during a conversation at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
“When you release art into the world, and it reaches a wide audience, and in my case, this was the widest audience I ever reached,” she said of her last album, 2024’s Brat, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“The work begins to sort of morph and change in its meaning,” she continued. “And obviously that’s just what comes with releasing art, period. But I’d never experienced it at the scale before, and it left me sort of thinking a lot about how we communicate art, at what point art leaves your own hands and goes into the audience’s hands, how that makes you feel as a creator.”
“I also think I am quite an emotional and volatile artist,” she added, “as I think many artists are. And I found elements of that journey quite difficult. I just felt that making this film, in a way, was a way of me not only commenting on art and the longevity, [the] lifespan of art, but also dealing with my experience, my very personal experience as an artist, and how I felt in the industry in the music industry.”
Brat opened at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and spawned hit songs like “360,” “Apple,” and, on the Brat and It’s the Same but There’s Three More Songs So It’s Not deluxe edition, the “Guess” remix featuring Billie Eilish.
