Chase Rice’s dog, Jack, easily steals the show at his Titletown Beats concert

Country singer-songwriter Chase Rice performs during the final Titletown Beats concert of the season on Aug. 26 at the Titletown district in Ashwaubenon.

Some artists save their best song for last. Chase Rice saved his best buddy for last.

The country singer-songwriter brought out Jack, his black Labrador retriever, to wrap up his free Titletown Beats concert on Aug. 26 in the Titletown district, and the crowd couldn’t get enough.

You got the feeling Rice could have announced Florida Georgia Line, his collaborators on “Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen.,” were there to help him sing his final song of the night, and fans wouldn’t have loved it as much as seeing a well-behaved Jack romping around onstage.

It just so happened it was National Dog Day, but Rice has been known to bring out Jack, the star of his “Bench Seat” video, most any night he’s performing. A sign in the crowd caught Rice’s eye earlier in the concert: “I came to meet your dog, but stayed because you’re cool too.” There was a roar of approval when Rice teased a possible Jack appearance by saying he was along with him in Green Bay.

Rice talked about how living out of his truck camper out West with Jack (he calls it the Doghouse) and fishing every morning has changed the way he sees the world and the way he writes music. His new album, “Eldora,” comes out on Sept. 19, which is also his birthday.

“Long story short, for the first time in my life I don’t have a record label to tell me what to do. I get to write songs that I want to write,” Rice said.

He played a couple of tracks off the forthcoming album. “Two Tone Trippin'” was irresistible pickin’ and grinnin’ fun and “Circa 1943” a love song set against the backdrop of World War II that was inspired by his grandparents, Harold and Berniece.

The hits that set the former “Survivor” runner-up down his musical path more than a decade ago were accounted for as well, including “Ready Set Roll,” “Eyes on You” and the “Cruise,” the smash he co-wrote for Florida Georgia Line. Rice unleashed his four-piece band on a fiery version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” a song he did with Jelly Roll while out on tour with him as a support act.

Rice made mention numerous times of how he couldn’t believe the fan turnout on a weeknight — one that leaned more sweatshirt weather than summer T-shirts.

“This is one hell of a crowd for a Tuesday,” he said.
