A royal expert has weighed in on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reputation in the United States and offered a brutal verdict on the couple’s future once Prince William becomes King.
Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan gave her two cents on what’s to come for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on The Royals Uncensored podcast, where she predicted the future Monarch would take a much sterner approach to the Montecito royals than his father King Charles.
According to Callahan, Prince William will not only be tough on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor over his links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, he will also come down hard on Harry and Meghan once he ascends the throne.
“I do think Harry and Meghan, their titles will be stripped,” she told podcast hosts Jo Elvin and Katie Nicholl.
However, she also predicted that, despite the Sussexes calling the United States home over the past six years, Americans wouldn’t lose too much sleep over their downfall.
“And we in America will be cheering him (Prince William) on.”
The Prince of Wales has not addressed what actions he will take as King, however he has hinted that there will be “change” during his reign, with a focus on carrying out royal duties with a small “r”, The Guardian reported in 2024.
It comes after reports that Princess Kate abandoned hope of a reconciliation with Harry after his public comments about King Charles III’s cancer battle struck a deeply personal nerve.
Both Kate and Charles were diagnosed with cancer in early 2024, with the Princess of Wales later announcing that she was in remission. The King, however, continues to undergo regular treatment.
Royal biographer Christopher Andersen claims the future Queen found it particularly painful when her brother-in-law referenced the uncertainty surrounding his father’s health while discussing a reconciliation with his family.
“The final straw came really shortly after the King was diagnosed with cancer, when Harry [essentially] said, ‘I’d like to mend fences because we just don’t know how long [my father] has to live’,” Andersen wrote in his book Kate! The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen.
The Duke of Sussex openly expressed his desire to reconcile during a BBC interview in May 2025.
“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” Harry said.
“Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has… It would be nice to reconcile.”
Andersen claims the comments fell flat within the royal fold, striking a particular chord with Princess Kate, who only months prior had revealed she was in remission.
“That kind of statement can be very hurtful to somebody who doesn’t really want to consider their own mortality and is battling cancer,” Andersen wrote.
The Princess of Wales has long been the quiet peacemaker between Prince William and Prince Harry, particularly in the years after the Sussexes turned their backs on royal life in 2020, according to the biographer.
“She was the one person in the royal family who wouldn’t give up on them.”
