Season 11 of “Chicago Med” is set to premiere on Oct. 1, and fans will notice a familiar face in the new episodes.
“Chicago Med” OG Nick Gehlfuss will reprise his role as Dr. Will Halstead in season 11 after previously leaving the show during season 8. Viewers last saw Dr. Halstead resigning from Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and flying to Seattle to reunite with his ex-fiancée, Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto).
Gehlfuss will be a guest star on season 11, although it’s unclear exactly how many episodes he’ll appear in. He previously told People that he and the “Chicago Med” producers agreed to leave the door open for him to return one day.
Nick Gehlfuss is returning to “Chicago Med.”
“[We wanted to] preserve the ability to bring Halstead back if the opportunity presents itself,” he told the outlet.
Gehlfuss originally starred on “Chicago Med” from its premiere in 2015 until 2023.
Two other “Chicago Med” alums, Rachel DiPillo (Dr. Sarah Reese) and Mekia Cox (Dr. Robin Charles), returned to the show last season. It’s unclear whether they’ll be back again for season 11.

As for the rest of the “Chicago Med” cast, Epatha Merkerson (Sharon Goodwin), Jessy Schram (Dr. Hannah Asher), Luke Mitchell (Dr. Mitchell Ripley), Steven Weber (Dr. Dean Archer), Olive Platt (Dr. Daniel Charles), Marlyne Barrett (Maggie Lockwood), Sarah Ramos (Dr. Caitlin Lenox), and Darren Barnet (Dr. John Frost), are expected to reprise their roles in season 11.
It’s unclear whether John Earl Jelks will return as Dr. Dennis Washington. After Sharon ended things with Dennis in the season 10 finale, there doesn’t seem to be a future for the character.
Season 10 of “Chicago Med” ended with quite the cliffhanger. Hannah unexpectedly became pregnant with her own child while trying to be a surrogate for her sister. The finale suggested that the father might be Hannah’s longtime friend Dr. Archer, whom she told the news before anyone else.
“Chicago Med” is the third installment of the “Chicago” franchise, after “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.”
Season 11 of “Chicago Med” premieres on NBC on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Seasons 1-10 are available to stream on Peacock.
